There’s so much competition but Kevin O’Connell always goes out of his way to show just how corny one can be.

Every night on WGRZ 11 o’clock news, someone will be reading a teaser for a story coming up and then Kevin will make a pun from that story and apply it to the weather. Sometimes its really awkward-like when its about someone who has cancer, but usually its just amazingly cheesy.

Tonight:
Scott Levin:”Apple is releasing new iPod’s”
O’Connell: “Well the only thing our weather is playing on our iPod is ‘Hot Hot Hot!’”

An interesting study came out saying that Buffalo’s loss of smart young people is right on average with the rest of the country. The real problem is attracting new people to come here to replace those people.

But thats not why I’m linking you to it. Watch the video. The end of it. And listen to Keith Radford’s reaction to the fact that Buffalo has added thousands of jobs again for the 6th straight month.

Local media is so used to only talking about bad stuff that they truly believe that only bad things are happening.

You have to make sure people know about the fires and murders and factory closings. But lets not demoralize everyone who watches the news and instead also let them know that for the first time in a long time, legitimately good things are starting to happen here. Kudos to Channel 7 for announcing the consistent (and modest) job growth. Hopefully as the small growth continues, the news can dwell on it a bit.

Congrats to WKBW for joining the Buffalo News as an old media group recognizing the need to have a 21st century website. While WGRZ and WIVB changed their banner, channel 7 added some nice features and is now the most pleasant looking and readable site of the three channels.

Every channel, especially CH4 has given wayyyyy more attention than it should to the whole “No beer at the ‘Party in the Plaza’ at HSBC Arena….OH NOW THERE IS AGAIN!!!! Must find out more!” story.

Taking that whole “small town mentality” to a whole other level.

Someone at WGRZ was like “Wow. 15 dead in a tornado. Thats a tragedy….maybe to entice readers we should put a graphic OF A TWIRLING TORNADO. YEEEEEEAH MAN!”

Graphic pretty much speaks for itself. Love the Buffalo mainstream media.

There are a lot of reasons to love Buffalo. One that is never mentioned is the fact we get CBC. A good channel that becomes the greatest channel on earth on Saturday nights for “Hockey Night in Canada”.
30minute pregame dedicated to a few 7:00pm games, Don Cherry for 1st intermission, a 10pm game from Western Canada, and then an after hours show.
Combine that with Tim Hortons and you see that Canada contributes a lot more to the good things in Buffalo than you realize.

I gotta tell you that Buffalo television media has the lamest studios, graphics, and web appearances I’ve ever seen in mid-major markets…There’s an article on WKBW about a woman who died in a fire in Cheektowaga and I swear to god this is their graphic…

Wow.

The second I get into Buffalo I turn on the news and the main stories were…

1. Casino
2. Bass Pro
3. Factory workers being layed off
4. Man drives down subway tunnel and crashes with train

Yuppppp nothing has changed

According to the Buffalo Business Journal, we’re getting 10 o’clock news again starting on April 20th. WGRZ and WNYO are partnering up. First 10min are news and weather, rest is sports. 30 minutes every weeknight. I hope it’ll be as good as WB49 was but
1. Why does NBC need two news broadcasts at night.
2. NO SARAH BISHOP

…god, I miss that woman already.

but in all seriousness, I really like the 10pm news, it was different from the rest of the newscasts and they did some stories the others never talked about. The only problem I had was the “NewsCentral” crap feed from Baltimore. It will be missed. BUt most importantly, Sarah Bishop will be missed.
