Burchfield-Penney 4.19.08

The Burchfield-Penney Museum is coming along with mixed results. The sides facing Buff State look really sleek, great materials and some nice accents.

But then urban epic fail with the Elmwood side as many people have already said. Should be a good addition to the community and should help push Buffalo as a low key, high brow type place to visit.

I vote no to living in a time capsule

Dear Elmwood Anti-Hotel D!@$%!*^%s,
Do you understand how cities work? A rundown neighborhood becomes a cool place for bohemians, then its popular with everyone, national developers and chains come in-pushing the bohemians to another neighborhood. Then the same happens to that place.
Apparently you don’t. We could have had a quality, national chain hotel come in and build a five story hotel, replacing five old, worthless houses. The location was prime. Right next to Buff State, the soon to be redeveloped Richardson Complex, the under-construction Burchfield Penny (which you ALSO tried to stop), and AK gallery.
Thanks to your valiant efforts Elmwood will not fall into the category of your typical city street that becomes hip, cool, and then commercial and expensive. In that way-you seriously hindered the growth of Buffalo. Why do you guys talk about Grant being the next Elmwood when Elmwood themselves have to fight hard to stay the way they are now?? Your lucky if your street wont turn into Grant the way you guys regard proper growth.
I’m so sick of you guys. I feel bad for all the good people who live around you.
Please don’t move downtown. That place still has hope for a prosperous future.
F*&^ you,
Mark and everyone else with a brain who cares about Buffalo.
A new hotel for Elmwood

A good idea for this part of town since its so close to Buff State and the Albright Knox art gallery. I don’t see too much heated debate coming from this project even though I think a lot of people will want to see those houses that are used as stores go. I will not. Although it gave Elmwood its unique flavor, I’d rather see that part of Elmwood look a little more contemporary instead of cheap-looking store facades. The new hotel will have underground parking and space for retail, keeping Elmwood’s charachter while evolving into a more contempoary shopping strip, perhaps with a little extra tourist revenue coming in now. There was a bit of uncertainty of the strength of the retail on Elmwood, but with this hotel and the new three story building going next to Mythos, it looks as if Elmwood will be strong for a while

Magic Cookies
Yesterday I did some Elmwooding as i like to say (walking down Elmwood ave. for those of you who are slow) and one of the last stores me and my friends went into was the Hemp Clothing store.

The guy there was extremely friendly (possible high, but thats another story) and on the way out he offered us cookies. On the way out another employee came in and said with a half evil half jubilant laugh “mmmmm cookies!!!” I am a little slow myself so I took one and enjoyed it despite its funny taste. Yes Buffalo, I had a hemp cookie yesterday and it was mysteriously enjoyable but legal. So a shoutout to my stoned homies at the Hemp Clothing Store on Elmwood. Keep baking.
