Galleria Mall construction 8.06.08

It looks like the high-end expansion of the Galleria should be completely done in time for Holiday ‘08…and with nice results.

Not seeing the whole faux-urban experience coming to life before, I see that they are putting retail immediately across from the Cheesecake Factory and such with the retail coming right in front of the new parking garage. Hyde Park Steakhouse is what you see at the picture above.

Above is ‘Bar Louie’-a pretty popular bar chain across the country. Interesting architectural elements include a kinda-garage door for a garage that never existed.

Overall I’m surprised how well the project was designed. The street that goes between the two sides of retail is two-way, one lane, low speed. Good sidewalks too. Wish this was all coming to Canal Side but Buffalo took forever to get their act together and Pyramid knew they needed to bring new life into a mall that was becoming pretty boring.

They should have some pretend houses around a pretend corner.

All of this retail should be in the City.

Like it or hate it, when it came time for cutting edge retail, Cheektowaga stepped to the plate and we are the epicenter of shopping and entertainment. And sadly, we will see none of this in our lifetime down by the waterfront… just some pretty historical markers, the skyway shooting over weed and gravel strewn empty lots, and that strong whiff of sewage as one makes their way to the arena.

Your pictures don’t do justice… the rehab of this section of the mall is state of the art and opulent in every way. Folks, drive on out eastward through the ghetto and into Cheektowaga and check it out for yourself.

    AK,
WTF kind of ‘epicenter’ of entertainment is Cheektowaga. If putting lipstick on a corporate pig makes you happy then good for you, but Christ, man, get real.

  5. STEEL Says:

Sounds like Cheektowaga may have a claim to epicenter of the world since its has stepped up to the plate. Only problem is that the ghetto Andrew is talking about is fast moving into Cheektowaga.

    No!!

Faster pussy cat - thrill thrill
I’m at the mall on a giant pill”

Perfect, I am sure the Talking Heads have a similar song in their portfolio as well

    Epicenter… made my day, thanks.

As Steel said, that ghetto everyone ran away from doesn’t stop at political borders. Both Tonawanda and Cheektowaga lost population in the last Census.. I do wonder how well they will fair in 2010.

The problem isn’t where the ghetto is or isn’t it is about a society that would rather run away from problems then actually try to solve them.

    “epicenter of shopping and entertainment”
    “cutting edge retail”

Wow those are some nice superlatives.
too bad the Galleria is 10 years late to the concept of “lifestyle center” (that name makes me cringe)
These are just higher end suburban chain stores and restaurants on a fake street/expanded wing of the largest mall in WNY surrounded by acres of parking.
    let’s not kid ourselves.

  10. STEEL Says:

I find it interesting how suburban people believe that the ghetto is someone else’s responsibility, as if they have a moral superiority to people that live in the city because that is were the ghetto has been mostly confined to. “I have a deal for you Buffalo - You keep all the poor people and we will take all the rich people and all the retail.”

  11. Andrew Kulyk Says:

Well snicker and laugh all you want… but before makiing final judgments on the new look Galleria, go check it out for yourself. As for what defines shopping and retailing in WNY, if it’s not Cheektowaga and the Walden Galleria, then exactly what does?

If I had my way, this would all be happening downtown… it should be happening downtown. I wish downtown would grab a hold of its past glory. But that ain’t happenin and that’s a real shame.

    Cheers

It’s too bad these stores couldn’t be in the City; I may shop at them more often.
