Anyone?

example
I found this board game in my Grandma’s attic 10 years ago and to this day don’t understand how to play it. I’ve posted about this game before when I had a very small readership…does ANYONE have or know about this game?

PS. I like how the box cover pic is about 30 years old and it looks almost exactly the same as it does now. Heh.

Last night someone requested directions (to where, I don’t remember) so I directed them to go towards City Hall and then north. He proceeded to tell me “What the hell is City Hall?” And I told him “That really big building” he then responded…”Oooohhhhhhh the big penis! Yeah I know where that is!”

No, this isn’t a preschool…

It’s actually my dorm hall of males between the ages of 18-21. I’m very proud of my peers and their knowledge of bathroom etiqutte. Sadly, the sign has made little difference.

God bless this place

Mayor Brown gave one of the most obnoxious and unfunny comedians ever the key to the city and then declared today to be “Kathy Griffin Day”

This is not good.

Not your ordinary preseason cut

example

William C. Rhoden has a book out about the stuggles of African American quaterbacks and this link is an exceprt of chapter 5 which is about former Buffalo Bills quaterback, James Harris who goes through the ordinary stresses of being on a preseason roster, and then some.

Rhoden usually pushes his agenda and I try to ignore everthing that comes out of his mouth ever since he declared that black athletes who make millions in the NBA and NFL are today’s slaves. But in this book excerpt, his interviews do the talking instead of him, and thats good.

It shouldn’t be like this!

Whenever I see this block my head swells with ideas of what I would do with it if I had the money, and then I remember how much/little is in my bank account.
The fact that such a beautiful block can still be like this-even as downtown adds new housing units every year-is heartbreaking and mindboggling.
Its been said before, but throw this block in NYC or Chicago or Toronto etc etc and this thing is one of the hottest spots to be. Hell, Eddie Brady’s draws good crowds despite its surroundings.
I wish these things actually were abandoned, the fact that people own them and aren’t doing anything with them is really the kicker.

A weekend well done by Buffalo

I brought my camera everywhere I went this weekend yet somehow I didn’t take even one photo. Regardless, I still feel the need to share.

On friday me and some friends went to the Albright Knox gallery to enjoy some free art. Although I’ve been there a handful of times I’ve never really taken much of a look. Pleasantly surprised to see we have a Mondrian. After some spanish classical guitar in Clifton Hall we headed to Fountain Plaza for some skating until the rink closed and capped off the night at Spot. I might be on Elmwood three or four times a year and everytime I’m just blown away by the urban density, the youth, and appreciation for design that the area has. I wish it would spill over into downtown soon.

Saturday while taking a break from writing my paper at the Central Library I came across a Bishop Fallon yearbook from 1977 which had an awesomly embarssing picture of my uncle Brian with muttonchops.

Finished off the weekend by going to my first ever Auto Show. The Convention Center is a lot better on the inside than it is on the outside (ha. that doesn’t really say much). Even though I’m a psuedo artsy and environmentally aware person with an affinity for Europe, I still have that basic American man-instinct to drive a gas-guzzling SUV while eating a quadruple cheeseburger. Although the cheesburger wish was not fulfilled I got to enjoy sitting in the driver’s seat of various large SUV’s that I will never own and the Navigator was my favorite of the whole show.

Kudos to the people in charge of the auto show who let the 2nd story doors stay open to the public via the walkway. I’m a poor college kid so I was dissapointed to see I could have saved 8 bucks.

All in all, Buffalo kept me entertained all weekend with a lot of good stuff to do…which is not always the case.

Another reason to love this place

example
There are a lot of reasons to love Buffalo. One that is never mentioned is the fact we get CBC. A good channel that becomes the greatest channel on earth on Saturday nights for “Hockey Night in Canada”.
30minute pregame dedicated to a few 7:00pm games, Don Cherry for 1st intermission, a 10pm game from Western Canada, and then an after hours show.
Combine that with Tim Hortons and you see that Canada contributes a lot more to the good things in Buffalo than you realize.

Clip/Stamp/Fold exhibit

example
In NYC a pretty interesting exhibit is going on for anyone into the intellectually rebellious period of architecture in the late 60’s through the 70’s. A series of various low budget architecture magazine covers are on exhibit on Kenmare Street in Little Italy.
As someone who wasn’t alive for this period it’s pretty cool to see that not too long ago there was a rather decent movement of architects who wanted to break free from the cliches that surround their field. Perhaps someday, architects will stop obessing over glass and metal and find a new form of archtiecture. A good review in the NYTimes today furthering the point.

PS: I’m in love with the magazine cover above.

I hope I don’t have to write the same letter.

I read this in the Buffalo News, and it was a reminder at the realistic fate that lies ahead for me. Parts of the letter made me feel as if I was reading my own letter, written 7 years into the future.

My friends always complained that there was nothing to do in Buffalo, and that there were no good jobs to be had. I vehemently denied such accusations and always championed for the place that everyone loved - and somehow loved to abandon at the same time.

There is a strong affinity for the Queen City all over America, with groups congregating to watch Bills games at places such as Lincoln Station in Chicago…I always found it odd that these people could love Buffalo so much but feel the need to get away.

When I lived in the DC region it was pretty easy to run into a Buffalonian. Whether it was when the Sabres would come into town or a Bills sunday at the Buffalo-themed tavern in Loudon County, VA, you’d see the passion and absoulute love for Buffalo but it took me until my return to Buffalo to figure out why they were down there and not up here.

There is a special vibe, a “je ne sais quoi” of sorts to Buffalo that brings out an intense love, a passion for a place that an outsider couldn’t comprehend. If only that vibe could create a healthy economy.
