Get to know him

Great article on Jack Davis in the NYTimes today. He always seemed like a bit of a character to me with his bizarre ads (even for Buffalo standards) and his very non-political everyday demeanor. Guess I wasn’t wrong.
I know Reynolds is taking a lot of heat from a lot of people (wnymedia especially) but you gotta look at both sides, and after finding out more about Davis you might want to think twice. It’s shaping up to be a “who’s not the worst candidate” type of race. Super.

Good thing these guys aren’t in my district.

Honestly, whatever. There were some good things in this game, Simpson’s INT, the last scoring drive we had by Losman. 53 yarder by Lindell,Parrish touchdown, and the McGee 75 yard return. If you don’t have power-be thankful you missed it because it wasn’t worth your time. The Bills weren’t supposed to be good this year, so if you just keep reminding yourself that during the games-losing won’t feel so bad.

Home against New England next week. If we win it, then half the region will be talking playoffs again.

Still undefeated

Wow. Still going strong on a 5-0 record. Didn’t look so good at first with the Rangers scoring left and right in one minute. But like the Detroit game, we got ourselves back together but this time we friggen dominated. Drury has six goals on the season (you know he’s gonna have a career year since he’s in a contract year) which is right up there at the top of the NHL.
Not gonna lie, the numbers on the chest on the retros are quite unessasary but more acceptable than the chest numbers on the other ones.

Who cares about jerseys….WE’RE 5-0!

Bass Pro updates?! Only good things come out of these!!

Example
Good ‘ol Bass Pro has come up with some new ideas in the never ending saga that is the Bass Pro saga.
Bass Pro doesn’t want to do this alone, so that means they need to have other retailers around them
THAT’S GOOD NEWS!
So they’re going to work with…Benderson Development aaand Erie Canal Harbor Development can’t have any say in what’s going on with Bass Pro or the Aud or the retailers that come along the property managed by Benderson.
THAT’S PROBABLY BAD NEWS

Now that Benderson is in it, I’m 100% sure Bass Pro is going to happen. I know Benderson will recruit some interesting retailers too, they have a very good reputation with national retailers.
I also predict that it will be a suburban, sterotypical Sheridan Drive-NF Boulevard-Transit Road-ish looking strip mall on the waterfront.

And that my friends…sucks.

Remember those days in which the Sabres would beat opponents who outplayed us thanks to the stellar play of Dominik Hasek? Well they’re back again apparently, execpt with Dom on the opposing side. Ryan Miller was just…augh…amazing. And clutch. Over 40 saves tonight.
Sabres looked like crap for the most part, especially in the 1st period, but somehow managed to just get by with 17 shots on goal…kinda like the City of Buffalo (except for the 17 shots on goal part).

Briere does it again in the shootout, and Ryan Miller is more amazing with each game.

4-0!

PS-Kinda hope tomorrow’s game is postponed…who the hell is gonna show up?

Where did they go?

BuffaloRising and WBEN are nowhere to be found online? Whats the dealy-o with that?

But WNYMedia is going strong. Clearly the superior of the local media.

Politics Shmolitics

I was gonna watch the debate tonight and just relax buuuuut my roomates informed me of their intentions to roll the worlds largest snowball. So 1.5 hrs later, a dozen spectators and eight extra men pushing we got that 5 foot baby down the staircase of the Ellicott Complex.
Aaaand then we drilled random people in the head with snowballs. Pictures eventually

Absolultely love the early October snowfall.

Seriously, you gotta set your priorities right sometimes.

Scholars acknowledge our bars

In all my Urban Planning books, Buffalo doesn’t get any mention. But today while studying for an exam I came accross some good stuff in a chapter on Urban Nightlife…

“In London, for example, last call in most public houses, is at 11:00pm, but new legislation in 2002 allowed some variation, while in the city of Buffalo, New York, closing time is 4:00am.”

“It is said that the bars in Buffalo, New York remained open until four in the morning precisely because that was the end of the night-time shift at the steel plants. Work started up again at 6:00am.”

-Key Concepts in Urban Studies, Gottdiener and Budd p.103

The fact that the bar closing time is the only mention of Buffalo in my Planning books is all I need to say right there. I love it!

Not good.

I don’t know what to say. Monday night some drug dealing thugs shot at a couple Buffalo cops at 10pm next to the Methodist church on the corner of Minnesota and Bailey. Now it’s not even my neighborhood, it’s my fucking street. It’s the street I grew up on, my dad grew up on, and pretty much anyone with my last name has been on for god knows how many visits, wedding ceremonies, birthdays, and whatever else to the household.

Thats the church my grandma and I would always walk by on the way to CVS. That’s the church where I’m registered to cast my 1st ever vote next month. The CVS is now a Wig Store, my 1st school, PS 63 was abandoned for a year or two and last year finally found some re-use. Minnesota ave was to me, a place where families were. Long established white families lived there, long established black families lived there.
A lot of the whites fled…mostly for racial reasons, un-neighborly people came in to rent and pay no attention to the moral fiber of the street. Black families left, leaving just old people who only stayed because it was easier to stay then start a new life.
Now my block is all renters, changing faces every season, and in the middle-five families who have owned their houses since the 1950’s. The last remnants of a better time. When they move on, who knows what lays ahead.

At night you can’t drive down the street because teenage thugs are too cool to use the sidewalk, and if you honk it only makes things worse. If your block is empty, you’ll see the flashing lights of cop cars down the street. Once a week seemingly, someone is mugged within two blocks. This summer there was a stabbing right in front of University Station, last week a 15 year old at LaSalle station was beaten by an older man for his coat, and thats with security cameras all over the stations.

I’m sick of it. Sometimes now on the news we’re thrown in to being called “the East Side” which means in media-lingo “poor, dangerous black neighborhood.”

Some of you will tell me to be positive but not all of you can say that you don’t feel safe on your own damn street in the middle of the afternoon.
Some of you will say “look at the physical improvements in the UD”. Yeah, brick sidewalks and medians are great. I’m sure they solve crime and encourage kids to go to school too.

It didn’t used to be like this, I thought the UD wouldn’t fall into the hole that seemingly everything else off Bailey fell into.

New Buffalo? Yeah, you’re right…things didn’t used to be like this.

Whoa! Hello, world of internets!

So I finally got around to looking at my stat counter for the first time since I joined WNYMedia.net in the summer.
Back in the good ‘ol days getting 70 hits would require some champagne (or a blue light…same thing) but apparently I average 1500 visits a day!

So basically I need to step up my blogging game a bit and make your visits worthwhile.

Any suggestions?
What sucks on this blog? What do you want more of? Why do I even bother?
Any comments?
Bring it on…I’d love to hear your input no matter how minimal or even supportive.
