Priceless

When I saw the video footage of Carl Paladino and Joel Giambra uncorking a bottle of champagne nearby the tolls this morning I was reminded that I am indeed living in Buffalo, New York.

this place is priceless.

A man of class

Buffalo’s own crazy man/director/actor, Vincent Gallo is dating a 16 year old! Good for him.
This is what he has to say about it:

“With the psychotic, middle-aged Madonna out there on the loose buying up all the stolen Negro babies in Africa, I felt it my social and humanitarian duty to take in any young, beautiful and sexy orphaned Jew teens running wild in Beverly Hills. Cory’s a great kid, and I’m proud to be her daddy.”

…well then…I think it’s clear Vincent Gallo hasn’t changed a bit. And we wouldn’t have it anyother way!

All good things come to an end

example
The magical run finally ended tonight at the HSBC Arena, with the Sabres losing 5-4 in a shootout. Sabres never had the lead and everytime they tied it up Atlanta immediately responded.

That goal by Hecht was quite exciting though…it’s amazing how we seem to always come up with the clutch goal.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Got 21 out of a 22 possible points to start the season.

Say it ain’t so!

My favorite local band, “This Day and Age” is calling it quits…here’s the passage on their MySpace…

“INDEFINITE HIATUS…

well, first of all this isn’t a joke; i know we write many outlandish messages, but this is a serious one…

during the past few months as i have thought about my future, it has become more and more apparent to me that my passion, my desire to create music, to be in a band has faded… i found myself not enjoying being on tour, not having written a word since we left the studio 6 months ago (these are odd things to me).

at first it was a small feeling, but it continued to grow until yesterday when i made a decision (the most difficult decision of my life) to step away from thisdayandage.

we are calling it an indefinite hiatus; which leaves some possiblities.

joey, steve, mike, and kelly will continue playing together but not as thisdayandage… they will begin on a new musical endeavor which i’m sure will blow all of our minds.

10/24 - 11/4 will be our final shows together… it would mean sooo much to me, soo much to us for everyone who has the ability to attend any of these shows to come.. especially buffalo.

this is a desicion that i wrestled with, that i had the hardest time believing at first; but i feel at peace about it.. it is a chapter in my life that is ending.. and i refuse to be a person who is involved with something that i am not 100% behind… i can’t pretend; i can’t do that to my bandmates; i can’t do that to you, i can’t do that to myself.

these past 5 years have surpassed anything i could have ever imagined.. and i can’t thank you enough.

love,
jeff”

Augh. Make sure you see them…I can’t tell you how amazing they are live. They released their latest album last month and it’s incredible even though they sound 999999x better in person. Musically, they took it to another level and were becoming more popular accross the country.

Big loss for Buffalo music. BIG loss.

Afinogenov is still the points leader in the NHL after adding two more tonight including a sweeeet breakaway goal in the 3-0 victory. Miller got his 1st shutout of the year. We go for the NHL record for most consecutive wins to start a season.

Good god this is the most amazing professional sports team I have ever seen.

Introducing…”City Tower”

example
There it is! Looks like a transparent HSBC Tower from that angle to be honest with you.
But anyways, its 40 stories, becoming the tallest in Buffalo, with a mix of office, hotel, and condos. Issa apparently will start construction when 40% of the office space is filled.
There are two things that could happen as a result of this building
1. The building draws new tennants from outside of downtown…reaching NYC and Toronto companies…therefore adding new jobs to the area.
2. It completley kills the market for office space in Buffalo, leaving those pesky surface lots to remain for a generation to come
example
I like the building up close, its materials and initial floors remind me of the new World Bank building in Washington DC.
Example
But in a way it looks like a cross between the Bank of America building that is being built in NYC, and the Erastus Corning Tower in Albany
Example
Reflects the courhouse perfectly though.

This building represents the future of Buffalo…if it gets built, and succeeds, then the psyche of Buffalo can really start to change for the better

If it doesn’t get built then it’s a statement that nothing has changed in Buffalo and we’re doomed to our fate like we always have been.

Issa…don’t fuck up. This is huge. Like…4 super bowl losses-no goal-adelphia communications tower-crawdaddy tower-new peace bridge-UB downtown campus huge.

DISCLAIMER: I swear I have normal testosterone levels for a 19year old male

Anywho…as I was listening to some Ani Difranco tonight I came accross one of my favorites that I haven’t heard in a while. As a former Poli Sci major who genuinley loathes politics I refuse to absorb her lyrics but it’s about the abortion clinic bomings of the mid 90’s including in Buffalo…I didn’t put this here for a debate about abortion…just to promote a great song…so download it

“Hello Birmingham” (1999)
Hold me down
I am floating away
In to the overcast skies
Over my hometown
On election day

What is it about birmingham?
What is it about buffalo?
That the hate-filled wanna build bunkers
In your beautiful red earth
They wanna build them
In our shiny white snow

Now Ive drawn closed the curtain
In this little booth where the truth has no place
To stand
And Im feeling oh so powerless
In this stupid booth with this useless
Little lever in my hand
And outside my city is bracing
For the next killing thing
Standing by the bridge and praying
For the next doctor
Martin
Luther
King

It was just one shot
Through the kitchen window
It was just one or two miles from here
If you fly like a crow
A bullet came to visit a doctor
In his one safe place
A bullet insuring the right to life
Whizzed past his kid and his wife
And knocked his glasses
Right off of his face

And the blood poured off the pulpit
The blood poured off the picket line
Yeah, the hatred was immediate
And the vengance was divine
So they went and stuff god
Down the barrel of a gun
And after him
They stuffed his only son

Hello birmingham
Its buffalo
I heard you had some trouble
Down there again
And Im just calling to let you know
That somebody understands

I was once escorted
Through the doors of a clinic
By a man in a bulletproof vest
And no bombs went off that day
So I am still here to say
Birmingham
Im wishing you all of my best
Oh birmingham
Im wishing you all of my best
Birmingham
Im wishing you all of my best
On this election day

I declare that tonight I wrote the greatest paper of my life tonight. After reading Louis Sullivan’s “Kindergarten Chats” six times I finally mastered his content and got ‘er done.

Out of all the architects I’ve had to read, Sullivan is one of the easier ones to understand. It’s amazing how architects just love to hear themselves talk. Guys like Vitruvius and pretty much anyone else expand a sentence that should be seven words and seriously make it a whole paragraph.

Sullivan was definitley confident in his work and elaborated a lot but at the same time he was adressing something so important-the beginning of the American skyscraper.

After doing the paper I realize
1. How damn lucky we are to have a Louis Sullivan skyscraper…has to be one of the best ones in terms of design and function in the world
2. How crappy so many skyscrapers are. With no regard for society or even the people who use the buildings. Just slop something together and there you go-a skyscraper-enjoy yourself.
3. Buffalo has a lot of the just mentioned and in a lot of ways it makes the Guaranty building stand out despite the fact its like the 17th tallest building downtown.

Wowzers

example
I missed tonights game due to a significant amount of work but I came back to my dorm to find out we won 4-1 and I’m just amazed.
I really thought this would be the night we lost. Montreal prolly gave us the best match any other opponent has given us barring Carolina, and it was in Montreal. But apparently Miller was dominant and we just shut les Habitants down like whoa.

It’s beautiful…it’s also a team record.

Next game Thursday v. Ted Nolan on the Island.

Six Sabres’ games until the next Bills one= GOOD.

Example
Yeeeeah that was pretty bad. I remember last year watching pretty much the exact same game in December between these two teams and wishing I left after the 1st quarter.
Just so many stupid little things that added up. I liked the intensity of Losman in the game but man that fumble at the end of the game could be the play that epitomizes the 2006 season.
It was good we sacked Brady a few times but other than that…jeeez.

BYE WEEK. THANK GOD. Then we host Green Bay. I say its time for a win.
