Some More Random Buffalo Adventures

Example

I decided to skip my Poli Sci lecture today and enjoy a cold November day about town. After going downtown to buy my Sabres tickets, I came back up to the University District and hung around. There really are a lot of little gems here that no one notices (okay fellow freshmen, PJ Bottoms DOES NOT count). The Steer, Lake Effect Diner, Jim’s Steak Out, Ming Tea Bar, Talking Leaves and some other good stuff…it felt nice to go into a good bookstore and just look around and feel smart, no annoying loud Long Islanders in sight, talking shit about my city and how much booze/girls they are gonna get on this Thursday night and how they can’t wait “to get out of this dump”. Well mr/ms stereotypical long islander, i hope you do leave, the only thing you do for this city is keep PJ’s open. I love my University District, it might not be the greatest thing ever, but its my old hometown, and it gets the job done.

“Here Come The Hats!”

As the great Rick Jeanaret would say…Pyatt had a hat trick, Connolly had 3 points, and some EPIC fights, “Hanson Brothers” style. Didn’t see it? Oh that’s because you were lazy and didn’y get yourself into the arena. As usual, I bought the $17 seats and sat in the $80 ones. So some good stuff, the Sabres have a winning record once again and have the 8-seed as of now in the conference. At Boston on Saturday

It’s Good To Be Back

Example
Oh man, I got to drive down around North Buffalo today mmmmm, it reminded me why I love this city so much, screw Amherst. Hertel Ave, North Park Theatre, Deleware Avenue, Forest Lawn cemetary, Albright-Knox gallery…so damn beautiful. THAT is why people love this city, and that is why I believe in this city. Sure it there was a mix of rain and snow, but I couldn’t let that get in the way of the beauty around me. Its days like this when it feels great to be a Buffalonian.

Bulls B-Ball

The UB Bulls basketball home opener is this weekend, and while I’m stoked to see “Hot” Rod Middleton, Calvin Cage and Yassin “The Dream” Idbihi light it up, I’m really intrigued by the women’s game.

New coach Lauren Hill-MacDonald is a proven winner, and UB has some real quality talent in Heather Turner and Stephanie Bennett. Even Brooke Meunier is back, a real sharpshooter. I have a feeling this team, with it’s young core already with a year of experience together, will really respond to a coach who has been to the NCAA tourney with two different teams and has coached in the WNBA.

While last year was the year of the men’s team (and I really think they’ll be a MAC force this year), I have a feeling we’re going to see a women’s team that turns it around the most.

The games are this Friday at Alumni Arena, women’s tip-off at 6, men’s at 8.

The new guy

Hi y’all. I’m Evan, the latest Buffaloist blogger, and I figured I’d take my 23rd b-day to introduce myself.

I’m a UB student with a knack for offending potential Buffalo mayoral campaigns. I’m also managing editor for UB’s The Spectrum, which should explain why I talk a lot on on the area near North and South Campus, and UB in general.

I bleed Buffalo Bills and UB Bulls blue, so expect tons on that, but being born in Rochester and raised in Pittsburgh split my hockey roots between the Pens and the Sabres.

Anywho, I hope you like what you see and check back often.

Hope you didn’t buy a Holcomb jersey yet…

Allright boys and girls, the Losman era is up and running again! Some awesome catches by Evans, a security guard breaking his leg, countless fights in the stands, and shutting down Trent Green completely makes for an awesome game. But now let me do a little urban planning rant that is Bills related…
The drive to Orchard Park (done many times before but only yesterday did it really hit me) frustrates me so deeply. Just imagine if these 80,000 people were driving DOWNTOWN instead of 30min south of it. It would be incredible for the city. A beautiful downtown stadium, people bringing in money to downtown…money from people who usually don’t touch downtonw with a 9 foot pole unless they work there. And if Detroit can get a Super Bowl, we can with a new stadium…just imagine the out-of-town money prospects there.Time is running out on the Ralph Wilson Staduim lease and Ralph Wilson’s life. City Council said they would discuss this issue this year, but it’s November and it still hasn’t been brought up yet. Here’s hoping Buffalo for once, gets something done right.

Finally!

It happened my friends, UB beat Kent State this afternoon 10-6…our first road/division/overall win of the year! And with that…enjoy your Saturday night.

New Era for Downtown

Example
For Buffalo standards, this went pretty quickly. New Era is moving to this bleak building downtown on Delaware Ave.
Example
According to the Buffalo News, they’re going to spen $10million on it and add a stadium-themed cap musem. If you know me you know I love hats…in fact i’m wearing my new era Buffalo Braves hat right now! This move means 240 new jobs in Buffalo, and that is always a good thing.

Some UB Stuff

Example
This is Phillip Warren of the UB Bulls. Freshman fullback who averages almost 5 yards a carry. Long story short, he’s probably the best thing UB Football has going for itself. I saw this picture and I just had to post it.
Example
Oh my friends, I find this picture so sterotypical and pretty fuckin hilarious too.

Our mighty Bulls take on Kent State today (which has one more win than us), lets see if we can pull off our first road/conference/overall win of they year!

Back on Track

Example

Ah yes, the Sabres did what they did best last night, beating the Leafs at “home”. Home is in quotations because well…there were one or two extra Leaf fans in the areana more than usual i think. Holy shit there were so many it was embarassing. But anyways, Tim Connolly had his FIRST two goal game ever! That’s proof right there for anyone who says that Tim was a huge bust. Grier (the unidentified black man in the picture), Drury, and Vanek scored as well. Biron was solid and it was overall an extremelyyyyy satisfying victory, especially to send those 10,000 leaf fans home pissed. So not only did we win, but we got a substantial amount of tourist dollars last night which you can’t say too often.
